The Kenya School Project
Since its founding, Mikkeller has been involved in various social and charitable projects. In 2025, we decided to focus on a long-term initiative that could make a meaningful impact: supporting education in marginalized communities. This led to our collaboration with the Kenyan NGO KenSwed, a highly experienced organization in education and development. Together, we are building and operating Mobile Schools (M-schools) in Kenya.

What are mobile schools?
Mobile Schools bring education to underserved and remote areas where traditional schools and opportunities for education are scarce or unavailable. They often operate in villages without reliable access to water, electricity, or educational infrastructure. M-schools are set up temporarily in rented community buildings, where learning hubs are equipped with Wi-Fi, solar-powered tablets, and study facilities. This flexible setup allows students to access vocational training, entrepreneurship courses, and general education in a practical and scalable way.
Why this project in Kenya?
Mikkeller's founder, Mikkel Bjergsø, has a personal connection to both education and running. As a former teacher and passionate runner, Mikkel has always wanted to create opportunities for others through these passions. In Kenya, many young people face high unemployment and limited access to education, especially in rural areas. Mikkeller connected with KenSwed, who share the vision of combining education and running to empower youth.
The Impact
Mobile Schools aim to break the cycle of poverty by providing education and practical skills that lead to employment, entrepreneurship, and personal development. Key outcomes include:
- Increased income and job opportunities
- Improved digital competence and media literacy
- Greater access to knowledge and information
- Lifelong learning and empowerment
Students in current M-schools have increased their income 2–3 times even before completing their courses, demonstrating the transformative potential of the program.
Why it matters
This project combines education, sports, and community support, helping young people develop skills that go beyond athletic careers. By providing accessible, flexible education, we are creating lasting opportunities and helping youth build a brighter, sustainable future.
